ERNAKULAM PRESS CLUB

The “Press Club Ernakulam” has the special status as the first inception of Press Club in India, was inaugurated on December 15, 1968 by Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi, Foundation Stone for the building was laid by Sri Bhagvan Sahayi, Governor of Kerala in Dec.12, 1966.
. With an enriched volume of members we have developed in to the sphere of a journalist embodiment in Kerala. Still Ernakulam is the main media center of Kerala and the “Press Club Ernakulam” has vast number of active members. Now, it has become an integral part for the development of Kochi. For the last 50 years, the Ernakulam Press Club has effectively involved in shaping public opinion by meaningfully performing it’s role as a vibrant fourth estate. It was in the year 2011; the Press Club hugged the modernization drive to uplift the face value to the organization in harmony with the rapid changes happening in the media all over the world. The key factors of the project implemented with the support given by the Kerala Government include an e-library and e-work-station for journalists and work area for improving the professional skill of the media persons. The year 2016 is a special and memorable time span in the history of the press club; it has completed 50 years of praiseworthy service. On Dec 16, 2016 Hon’ble Governor of Kerala Sri Justice P. Sathasivam inaugurated the golden jubilee anniversary of the Press Club Ernakulam.

Our Aims and Objectives

To raise the status of the members of the profession of journalism.

To promote a spirit of cooperation and understanding among Working Journalists.

To strive for the betterment of working conditions of journalists, especially in terms of salary, tenure of office,security of service, conditions of service, etc.

To promote and maintain the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.

To safeguard and promote members’ interests generally and to assist them whenever necessary in securing employment.

To promote amenities for recreation and scope for social and cultural activities.

To build up and administer funds for provision of legal aid, unemployment/disablement/retirement/death benefits and
benefits of an allied nature.

To promote wage agreements on a State-basis, the Union Wing on behalf of the employees.

To secure redressal of grievances of members in particular and Working Journalists in general against employers and to
secure, as far as possible, a settlement of disputes between them by Peaceful means and specific bargaining so as to avoid
needless dislocation of work.

To work for and promote legislation for the welfare of Working Journalists.

To strive for the freedom of the press.
